Longterm review Hama Traveller Popup tripod

It is was

a great (little) tripod for travellers

Update august 2018

the ballhead stopped clamping ...

At first instance I was happy with this special tripod. It is compact, leightweight and fast to handle, although it lacks macro facilities.

But the ballhead was always "balling" a bit rough. This is caused by the clamps and ball not being milled but (only) casted. It therefore was always quite difficult to position the camera in the desired position. Also since it's legs are of the tent-pole type and so are not adjustable.

But in the course of time the ballhead clamped less and less tight. When I bought this tripod I was using the Olympus Stylus 1 (that I really can recommend, weight 0.410 kg). But later I upgraded to the superb Panasonic FZ1000 camera 🖱️. And shortly after, actually very shortly after if you consider the times used, the tripod was no longer able to hold that 1 kg camera any more.

I then noticed that the two halves of the clamp simply touched each other to soon, so before the ball was clamped firmly. At this picture it looks well but it is not (at the inside).

If I had had the possibility to work at it in a workshop I probably could have solved this problem. Just by uninstalling the head and then grind off a small (0.5 mm) amount of material of the two clamp halfs. I didn't have that possibility and therefore left the tripod behind in a hostel.

This is the original review :

This tripod uses the principal of the foldable tentpoles to create a maximum height of 112 cm out of a transport-length of just 38 cm.

Unfolding takes just about 3 seconds. Just release the two elastics that hold the bundle together, let the poles drop down and they will assemble themselves with help of the internal elastics.

Folding will take about 30 seconds. Retract the pole-sections, fold them zigzag (pole per pole), wrap the elastics around the bundle and slide the knots into the brackets. It takes only about the time to read this sentence.

The legs are not adjustable. The upper tube is fixed to the ballhead and the other poles click into each other. But you can extract a leg easily (and turn it away) which brings you 4 heights.

The tripod weighs just 312 grams.

It does not come with a bag.

Maximum camera weight is 1 kg.

There is no clampplate. You have to screw the tripod directly to your camera. This is rather unhandy and also dangerous since you easily loose control on your camera then.

It can not be used for macro pictures since the most upper-leg is fixed to that ball-head. So the minimum height is that same 38 cm transport length.

Compared to regular tripods it is a little wobbly which is logical. Then all junctions can not be tightened nor fixed so they all cause a little play. However this is not a real problem but more something to get used to and accept.

Verdict

The Hama Traveller Popup tripod is a great little piece of travellers equipment. However, and despite it's spec, it is not able to handle a real camera.
